Flurina and Gianni Paravicini-Tönz
For over two decades, our gallery and publishing house have been active on the "periphery" of the international book and art market.
In 1986 in Poschiavo, a town on the very edge of Switzerland, we founded Galleria Periferia, an unconventional venue for exhibitions, concerts and readings -- unconventional for being tucked away in a beautiful mountainous region of Switzerland and, above all, for a variety of artistic responses to the unusual architecture of the space and its surroundings. A series of distinctive summer exhibitions, in the spirit of a kunsthalle, was the result
After moving to Lucerne in 1992, we consolidated our publishing activities by establishing Edizioni Periferia. Our core focus gradually shifted from exhibitions (which we continued to mount for several more years in Poschiavo) to publishing. Since then we have issued several dozen artists books, some of which have long been out of print and are much sought after.
The books, editions, videos and DVDs represent an engaging palette of interests addressed by internationally renowned artists. Our publications are self-contained works, issued in small, usually limited and often numbered editions. Their subject matter may be a work of art, an installation, a performance or a theory, which the artists wish to preserve for posterity. Co-designed by the artists, they are works of art in themselves, which - in contrast to works for exhibitions - enjoy the privilege of being analyzed in accompanying theoretical and philosophical essays by renowned writers.
It goes without saying that our publications and editions are produced with uncompromising care. They effectively contribute to the larger cultural debate, especially inasmuch as the Galleria and Edizioni Periferia have shown that the periphery can move to the centre and the centre to the periphery.
