It was only relatively late in life that Josephine Troller, born in Lucerne in 1908, began to take a profound interest in sculptural means of expression. Around 1945 Troller, who trained as a milliner, produced drawings which she initially regarded as her own personal spiritual sanctuary. Critical public opinion began to embrace her towards the end of the 1960s. As an artist she uses an idiosyncratic pictorial language to express her existential themes. Later, in the wake of Lucerne’s buoyant 1970s art scene, she went on to produce an artistic body of work distinctively autonomous in character.
