The photographer as an explorer: Over the past 20 years, Guido Baselgia has sought out the geological margins of this planet, probing its barren expanses and observing light phenomena with his camera. Following the well-known work cycles – «Hochland», «Weltraum», «Silberschicht« and «Light Fall» – this new book now introduces Baselgia’s latest project. His expeditions take him to Ecuador and Peru, to the Amazon basin, where he explores the very essence of photography in attempting to capture the elusive phenomena of the tropical rain forest. He transforms its shimmering density and rampant vegetation into compositions of the greatest calm and concentration. Portraits of indigenous inhabitants and still lifes from their surroundings bear photographic witness to a world under threat. Like a memento mori, Baselgia’s work pays tribute to this landscape and the repercussions of its economic exploitation on the global climate.
