“The entire village is on its feet when the moon is full”

In the summer of 1884, Tartarieu Seugrem, a master butcher from Port-Louis, the capital city of the fictional island of Lemusa, spent several weeks travelling throughout central Switzerland. He wanted to learn about the country his mother’s native country because she had come from Lucerne. He was accompanied by his translator and mountain guide Toni Ming, a young Alpinist from Obwalden. Parts of the diary Seugrem kept during his trip have survived. He writes about his adventures, describes the food that he was served and recounts ancient tales, in which animal organs play a conspic-uously frequent role. Here and there, the text contains unskilled drawings of flowers that had attracted his attention in the course of his wanderings.
In the summer of 2021, Samuel Herzog, a journalist from Zurich, wandered throughout central Switzerland seeking to follow the trail of Tartarieu Seugrem. He complements his predecessor’s observations with his own a hundred and forty years later. The publication unites Samuel Herzog’s texts with Seugrem’s captions, recipes and flower sketches.
