The artist has created a cabinet of curiosities for his permanent installation at the Kunstmuseum Luzern. Presenting such objects as stuffed animals, African sculptures, masks and seashells, Urs Lüthi fuses a diversity of items into a self-contained whole – as a museum in a museum – thus giving us an insight into his personal take on collecting. On one hand, viewers are drawn into the artist’s memento mori and confronted with their own transience; on the other, they are presented with the nature morte. Lüthi has always been fascinated with both forms, the personal implications of the former, the generalised implications of the latter. His texts tell us about the origins of the objects and why he finds them so fascinating, allowing readers and viewers to come another step closer to “the art of his mind”.
