Julia Steiner (*1982) spent 11 years, from 2005 to 2016, collecting objects. Fragmente der Welten now comprises 220 items, each with its own cardboard box, custom-built by the artist, which serves both as packaging and for presentation in installations. The fragments relate to growing, becoming and passing. They are the forms and fortunes of the world in miniature, the narratives and vagaries of thought. Steiner’s collection is essentially a personal archive of designs of the world made out of found pieces, modified everyday objects, newly created ones or things that have emerged in connection with other works by the artist. Fragmente der Welten is presented in installations. Now it has found a place in an artist’s book that is in itself an object– an inventory that makes the overwhelming and often fragile collection newly accessible for uninterrupted perusal and appreciation.
