This volume is being published following the exhibition Futur intérieur held in January 2010 in the Kunstraum Walcheturm, Zurich, that was sponsored by the Dr. Georg and Josi Guggenheim-Stiftung. Since 2006, the foundation has awarded a major prize to a young artist every year during ART Basel. This prize also includes an exhibition and an artist’s publication that appears a little later. Kathrin Sonntag was awarded this prize in 2009.

The starting point for her work on the exhibition and the book is the passion shown by the benefactors themselves and the auction catalogue for the sale of their art collection at Christie’s in 2004. Kathrin Sonntag picks up on the artists in the collection and on the collectors’ relation to them, interwoven with her own relationship to the Guggenheims and fragments of her personal background, as well as the everyday examination of art and its creation. Within the to-ing and fro-ing between spaces, realities and times, a story unravels that takes place in the interim space between presence and absence, told using a variety of different media.
