Handrail - Kunst Museum Winterthur an Others Worlds

Study of the line as such is a salient feature of Rütimann’s oeuvre. Starting with the classical drawing, the artist translates and transports it into monumental ormats in his socalled handrails, lending them the nature of a performance. For over 20 years, he has been following real handrails with his camera mounted on a small wagon. These works, which he calls Geh-Länder (a play on Geländer, German for rail: Geh = walk, Länder = countries), have acquired such proportions that they clearly merit deeper inquiry. Point of departure for this publication is a work created specifically for the museum in Winterthur, which is discussed and analysed in the context of the work complex as a whole. Essays by Konrad Bitterli, Lynn Kost, Andrea Lutz and David Schmidhauser address various aspects of the handrails.
