Nagelfluh

For some two years, Andi Rieser has been collecting and working with stones that he has found or broken out of rock faces not far from where he lives in the Napf region of Canton Lucerne. The stones are part of Nagefluh, a rock formation created by Alpine alluvial scree deposited millions of years ago and compacted into a solid conglomerate. Cemented into this conglomerate are inconspicuous, more or less round stones that also lie about in vast quantities. By cutting them open and polishing the cut surfaces, Rieser reveals an innerworld of astonishingly diverse colours, structures and shapes.
The book shows a selection of these cuttings and juxtaposes them with their respective outer shape. These are complemented with macro photographs and pictures of the landscapes where the stones were found. Viewers discover visual affinities and associations of their own, establishing a link between prehistory and contemporary form-giving forces. In addition to Rieser’s introductory text, the geologist Helmut Weissert outlines the scientific context and Jana Bruggmann provides an artistic interpretation.
