Olga Titus

Olga Titus (*1977, CH) explores questions of identity and cultural heritage against the background of her Swiss-Indian-Malaysian origins. Her videos, installations and works made of printed sequins present a captivating universe of Bollywood aesthetics, folklore, popular culture and computer games. This book focuses on her work with sequins, which she prints on both sides to create compositions generated by running her hand over the sequins and rotating them in selected places. Titus describes flipping the sequins as a painterly gesture, adding that her pictures are never finished. The incidence of the light changes the play of colours, and touching the sequins realigns them to yield new imagery. Matter and light are also closely related in the video Crystallization. In the book we see a kaleidoscopic crystal meeting up with scraps of Asian landscape, archaic masks or Second Life beaches. Alternating between digital picture and analogue objectivity, Olga Titus’s visual universe sharpens our appreciation of complex cultural forms of expression.

Olga Titus is the fourth winner of the Bündner Kunstverein art prize. The sponsorship includes a solo presentation at the Bündner Kunstmuseum as part of the annual exhibition of Bündner Künstler 2022 and the publication of a book.
