rayed made

With drawings by Erwin Hofstetter

Marcel Duchamp took great delight in wordplay: like his readymades, consisting of everyday objects, his wordplay is also based on existing material, for which reason Francis M. Naumann described them as “printed readymades.”
Guy Markowitsch has created 12 anagrams out of the word “readymade,” such as a dye dream, dada emery, and my dead ear. They might be called looped “printed readymades,” inasmuch as the letters quite literally mirror their own pre- existence. Markowitsch exploits this self-reflective aspect hermeneutically by using the anagrammatically hidden meanings of the word to illuminate Duchamp’s oeuvre. The result is an innovative, lucid approach to Marcel Duchamp between poetic wordplay and analytic eloquence.
The author’s preface and commentary on each of the
12 readymade anagrams is accompanied by stamps and illustrated with 12 contoured, miniature drawings by
Erwin Hofstetter.
