Albrecht Schnider / Entwegte Landschaft

The book Albrecht Schnider. Entwegte Landschaft singularly highlights the landscape as motif. Somewhat like the nature guides used by hikers to identify plants and animals, Albrecht Schnider gives us a rare insight into the process of creation that underlies his landscape paintings.
The sequence of reproductions reveals that process from the first, initial sketches to more detailed studies in cardboard and finally to source images of near mathematical precision, which are then transferred to canvas. The reproductions conclude with views of the eponymous exhibition at Kunstmuseum Thun, marking the conclusion of the series in which the finished works enter into dialogue with the space of the museum. In addition, a new group of landscapes made on the occasion of the exhibition reveals the artistic turn taken by Schnider since coming back to Switzerland in the spring of 2018.

The title Entwegte Landschaft (Pathless Landscape) not only reinforces the impression of these untouched landscapes that show neither paths nor traces of the paintbrush; it is also a play on words since entwegt (originally a Swiss word) gently but unmistakably echoes the artist’s “coming home” to Switzerland.

A foreword by Helen Hirsch, director of the Kunstmuseum Thun, and essays by Angelika Affentranger-Kirchrath and Susanna Koeberle subdivide the sequence of reproductions, introducing readers of these pictures to the themes of Schnider’s landscapes. Affentranger-Kirchrath places Schnider’s work in an art historical setting while Koeberle explores the neutral spirit that underlies his landscapes.

The book is published on the occasion of the exhibition Albrecht Schnider. Entwegte Landschaft at Kunstmuseum Thun (29 May – 15 August 2021).
