Die imaginäre Bibliothek von Lutz & Guggisberg

In the course of some 20 years, Andres Lutz and Anders Guggisberg have created over 450 models of books. Their ironic, critical and poetic take on real books in the real world is actually an emerging compendium of the world itself. These solid chunks of plywood in book form each have a glossy or matt inkjet print glued onto them as a cover. The choice of title, author and blurb as well as the graphic design are the playing field of the artists’ extensive research into every conceivable genre: non-fiction, how-to books, novels, poetry, mystery stories, anthologies, science fiction, children’s books, biographies, art books, exhibition catalogues, newspapers, journals, popular science, history, geography, anthropology, and on and on. The result is an overwhelming cornucopia of ideas, inventions and retold stories, which has been divided into 22 chapters for readability; the graphic design, the choice of images and the blurbs, here printed as running text, all play a crucial role.

Some of the “books” seem very close to reality while others chart imaginary territory; flashy bestsellers stand next to abstruse little volumes, the whole condensing into a cabinet of wonders that offers an endless diversity of delights, a reference work of the world seen through the dazzling lens of Lutz & Guggisberg.
