Basics

School of Health Professions in the former industrial quarter of Winter- thur. The project marks a turn in the artist’s career, for it has been some 25 years since Albert, known for her video work, last presented any drawings to the public.
The point of departure is a voluminous body of small-format pencil drawings, free associations inspired by what she saw and heard while attending lessons in the health field. These drawings, a veritable stream of perception on the human condition, gently draw our attention to the great enigma of the biological foundations of existence, the “building blocks of life”.
Eleven of the drawings have undergone an exciting process of transformation. Albert changed the scale of the drawings through digital projection and created oversized tattoos, using a kind of contemporary sgraffito technique to engrave the lines into the concrete walls of the spacious, urban atrium designed by pool Architects. The chisels of the stone carvers have exposed the mixture of stone hidden in the concrete, making the material appear organic and reminding us of the close relationship between the micro and macro structures of the world in which we live and that we ourselves embody.
The two-part publication contains over 200 drawings with an accompanying book documenting the progress of the project in the Adeline Favre Building. We see Judith Albert and her partner Gery Hofer implementing the drawings on site, we look over the shoulders of the craftspeople at work, and we experience the interaction between architecture and art, just moments before students and teaching staff take possession of the building.
